Located at the entrance of a residential project along the shore of Dalian Bay, The Sea Vibes installation is a testament to the power of design to capture and interpret the natural world. The installation is a massive cylinder formed by double-layer copper plates. It consists of 6000 plates which were hung in the frame according to a specific permutation. As you move around the cylinder, the installation mimics the movement of waves, one after another, creating a captivating visual spectacle.
The installation's unique design was inspired by the sea, the defining feature of the residential project's location. The design team at ToThree Design used the language of waves to create a cohesive visual experience throughout the space, including the logo, lamps, and signage. The result is a space that feels unified and connected to its coastal surroundings.
The Sea Vibes installation is not just a visual masterpiece, but also a technical marvel. The installation is made from double copper plates and is 8 meters in diameter. The biggest challenge faced by the design team was to create a sense of movement that resembles the endless waves of the sea using a fixed installation. The solution was to use a cylinder form with hanging copper plates, which creates a dynamic effect when viewed from different angles.
The installation has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019. This award is given to designs that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advance art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, The Sea Vibes installation by ToThree Design is a stunning example of how design can capture and interpret the natural world. Through its innovative use of materials and form, it brings the rhythm of the sea to life, creating an immersive experience that resonates with the coastal location of the residential project it adorns.
